Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex released

Ubuntu 8.10 is available for download today. And because Ubuntu Linux is open source software and we've been following its development for the last 6 months, there aren't a ton of surprises. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't download it if you're running Ubuntu 8.04 or if you're looking for a new Linux distro to try. Because it does include a number of tweaks, bug fixes, and improvements. Here are just a few:

Improved support for connecting to 3G wireless networks
A utility for loading a fully working Ubuntu installation on a USB disk
There's a new System Cleaner utility that will help identify abandoned software packages (which could address one of my biggest pet peeves about most Linux distributions)
The Nautilus file manager now supports tabs

In addition to Ubuntu 8.10, you can also download the latest version of Kubuntu today. Kubuntu is basically Ubuntu with the KDE desktop environment instead of GNOME. Xubuntu 8.10, which uses the Xfce desktop environment is also available today.

Brad, instead of using the builtin Package cleaner, you could use latest version of Ubuntu Tweak 0.4 whuich has it. If you are using Hardy, you can use it.

So, is it safe to use on my laptop now? I've been meaning to dual boot Ubuntu, but been waiting for the this release. It's too bad you can't triple boot on a mac. If you could, i'd have Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Hi,

I've got Vista and Ubuntu 8.1 dual booted.

1. Install Vista. Mine was using the DELL cd so the entire HD was used.
2. Boot into Vista and partition the HD. I left about 50GB for Ubuntu.
3. Downloaded the Ubuntu and burnt to a CD. Booted the CD and click Install.
4. During the install, I chose to keep the Ubuntu Partiton as NTFS, what Vista left it as.
5. In the install program choose NOT to overwrite the boot sector.
6. Boot into Vista. Download EasyBCD by Neosmart Technologies.
7. Start BCD and it searched the HD's and found both installs and gave me the option to add the Ubuntu as a Boot option. I changed it to be the Default.

Now when I boot up it will default to the second option, Ubuntu, Ubuntu then starts grub under the NTFS and allows me to reboot into Vista as the last option (if I pres ESC at the GRUB menu prompt, so you could continually manually restart into each one - neat!). It will boot into Ubuntu. When I want to start Vista I have to just catch it at the Vista Boot loader and select Vista and away it boots.
NOTE: The Grub loader will allow me to select Vista but returns me to the Vist Boot lodaer so I have to manuall y select it here!

PS: There IS a triboot option for Mac, windows, Ubuntu but I dont have a Mac and havent trried it. I dont know what you need installed first....

Thanks for the tips. I have done dual boot before, but this is an interesting method. I should try this sometime. I usually just use the default grub loader I think. It'd be really interesting to get triple boot to work since I like all 3 OS's. I've looked everywhere. Oh well. I'll just stick with what i've got.

Anyone having problems finding a working mirror can use Metalinks. They also can tell you if the download was corrupted.

Downloaded UBUNTU 8.10 from 3 USA sources and got as many as 17 file errors when verifying the disks. Tried a source in England and got 1 file error.
Loaded release 8.10 on old computer and seems to be running O.K. so far.

Hope mirror sites can get "good" download copies soon.

Civiballs is a beautiful, soothing physics puzzle Time Waster

I have an absolute weakness for physics games, and while Civiballs isn't the strongest physics-based game, what it lacks in the physics department it makes up for a few times over in style and fun.

In Civiballs, you are presented with a few colored balls, and your goal is to get those balls into the same-colored urn on the level. The "civi" part of Civiballs is that there are 3 sets of levels to play, each representing a different civilization. While the civilization doesn't affect gameplay, the artwork for each level is beautifully themed to it's appropriate era.

To play the game, you are given only one tool - a sword with which to cut the chains that are holding the balls. The puzzle part of the game is in figuring out what order, and with what timing to cut each chain. Do it right, and all the right balls end up in the right urns, with no stray balls entering an urn (a no-no). Do it wrong, and you get to start over again.

Civiballs is not terribly deep on gameplay; the entire game can be completed in about 15 minutes. But if you enjoy this type of game, it will be a very enjoyable 15 minutes.
