Jason's Favorite Windows apps: MindManager

While there are lots of different mind mapping options available, Mind Manager is definitely the best one available. Unfortunately, MindJet, the creator of Mind Manager, has positioned it as a premium tool with a price point of $399 for a new license. While I'm sure there is a market for the product at this price point, it's too bad that this remarkable tool is not more accessible. Also, beware when visiting MindJet's website, as it starts playing obnoxious music automatically as part of the animation on the main page.
With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.

I too agree FreeMind is an excellent FREE alternative and best of all it is cross platform. As someone who uses the Mac, Windows and Linux having cross platform capabilities is crucial and I know that all the hard work I've spent creating a complex map isn't lost if I choose to change computing platforms in the future.

MindManager is a great program and have used it a fair bit at work, though I got to say I actually prefer FreeMind! OK it hasn't got the office intergration, but it is way faster at getting my thoughts mapped- and that's more important to me anyway!

Sorry I'm new to the notion of mind mapping. When is it better to use mind mapping instead of concept mapping?

MindManager is OK if it's just you. But you can't share your maps with anyone who doesn't use Mindmanager. I prefer Spinscape -- its a web-based app that not only functions as a mind map, but it lets me share any parts of my map with any number of people. It even has options to easily import data from Web searches. Check it:

Mindmeister.com and mindomo.com are great web based mapping alternatives that have good pricing.
I have mind manager 7 and use mindmeister when i don't need the whole package.

MindManager is a bloated program that is exorbitantly expensive (you'll pay 50% of the original purchase price every time you upgrade to a major new release, and you can tack on 30% more to all their prices if you live outside the US). Furthermore it is deliberately (one of their staff told me) designed to work best with Microsoft products. So for example it says you can output to a .doc document - but this will only work if you have MS Word installed, as it uses the MS Word libraries.
I don't know about the support in the US, but I live in South Africa, and the tech support from Germany has been appalling - you wait a week or two for every reply on a particular issue.
I gave up on MindManager earlier this year and bought XMIND instead. It has a beautiful interface, and does everything I want flawlessly. The only downside is some loopy English here and there (it comes from China).
