How to add a file extension column to Windows Explorer

In order to install CPExt, you need to download and unzip the installer to a temporary folder. Right click on the file marked CPExt.inf and select install. Once you reboot your system you'll be able to add an Ext column by right-clicking on a column in Windows Explorer and choosing "more" from the drop down menu. And then you can proceed to systematically delete every EXE file on your hard drive and make your computer practically unusable. So umm... proceed with caution.

Yea - doesn't sorting by "type" essentially sort by extension? I don't get it.

Definitely .. I always have "Hide extensions of known file types" turned off and sorting by Type groups by file extension. Would be handy if hide extensions was enabled - which is annoying the default state for Windows.

'Type' is the MIME type of the file. A 'type' can have several very different file extensions. :-)

It looks a bit redundant with the file extensions visible, but I think the intent of the application is when you have one program that hogs a bunch of file types and calls them all the same type (e.g. Winamp Media File - mp3, wma, etc). If I am trying to track down just the wma's to figure out which are not synching to my iPhone, this would help, while sorting by Type would not.

What exactly do you think file 'Types' means??? Do you really use the pc for more than telling us about your new-found programs?

It may seem redundant. But I can see a use for it.
Some of us may have file extensions which are different but have the same (MIME) file type.
A good example is to go into your c:\Windows folder and look for file type - 'Text documents'. These can be .log or .txt which appears the same type.
Others could be 'Video clip'. This can be .avi, .wmv, .flv, .mp2, .mpeg, well you get the idea.
This app would allow a little better sorting. :-)
Maybe one for us IT bods?
