Mozilla Firefox breaks non-existent world record - nobody cares
Remember, that whole Firefox download day thing that we got so amped up about? Us too.Remember when their servers screwed the pooch for most of "Download Day"? Us too.
How about that vulnerability that affected all 8 zillion of us who downloaded version 3? Yep, we remember that too.
Now you can put all those rough memories behind and sleep easy. Today, Mozilla "officially" announced setting the record, with 8,002,530 downloads on the release day of Firefox 3. It's fair to point out that, nothing was broken here... this was a new record, hence "setting" and not "breaking".
Will you remember Mozilla set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours on June 18th, 2008? Neither will we.
But congrats on still being #2 Firefox. Let us know when that changes and we'll jump around and party like it's 2035!
So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

Wow, why are you mad? I don't get it...
AFAIK, we should all be pleased with the release of FF3, due to it's great improvements over the last version, mostly the RAM-consuming issue.
Yes, I remember the download day... I remember anxiously waiting for the day to come so I could finally download it, and I bet you were too. As harmx said above, it's only marketing... You need it if you want to set a "most downloaded software" World Record, right?
Yes, I remember all those "Service Unavailable" pages I got when trying to download, but seriously, do you know how it's like to be able to send over 14000 copies per minute? That's almost one Terabyte of data per minute for the Firefox downloads! Do you have any idea of the bandwidth costs for this? Of the servers usage? Does anyone here have any idea? I don't, you don't, and I bet no one here does.
Yes, I'm aware of the vulnerability that came with FF3, but I must disagree with you that it has affected over 8 zillion people as you have said. Yes it is there, but as far as I can remember, I was NOT affected by it, and probably neither was you or hardly anyone here. I bet that if you had never heard of such vulnerability, you weren't saying that, even though it would still exist.
Also, do you have any idea of how hard programming is? How hard it is to foresee every and single possible user action in the whole World Wide Web? Honestly, mistakes DO happen, and I was actually surprised that only ONE major vulnerability was found.
And finally, yes, I WILL remember that Mozilla set a World Record on June 12th, I WILL remember that this was the launch day of the best browser I've used so far, and I WILL remember how ignorant you sounded at this post.
Honestly, I've been reading Download Squad for quite some while but this is the very first post that I felt the urge to comment. And that's sad.
For peegee, you should try Opera 9.5, another great browser that I admire a lot.
Also, don't mind any English mistakes, not my native language and I had to learn it all by myself.

I hate Firefox on my MacBook I swear it freezes like I have some kind of memory leak. Safari doesn't have enough features, just makes me sad. I'm going to get on my pc...

what a hater, sorry IE is out of date and a mess, IE is the worst product out there.

Where did he say IE was necessarily better? Just because he's hating on Firefox, does not automatically make him an IE user. He could be using Opera or Safari.
Why don't you rat on those browser too? I use IE7 most of the times, and it's not exactly "out of date", nor is it "the worst". I have issues from time to time of course, but I have issues on Firefox, and other browsers too. NO browser is perfect.
In fact, DLS is usually pro-FF. I see more add-ons for Firefox, than IE7 these days. One post that disses FF makes a lot of people act like this?
Hating must come easy to people, rather than loving or at least being fair-minded.

IE users are mostly stupid that's why they keep on dissing firefox... to have a little dignity on themselves.

Good for them.. I still haven't found a need to switch over though. Common sense is all you need to be safe using IE & Windows.

I think everyone is giving drew a hard time... he just wanted a to point out the silliness in the statement. Instead everyone is takes it like there bashing him and in return everything he says sounds bitter even if it isn't.
Except for the Sarah bit he did... that was uncalled for..

Meh good for them I guess.. Though I still haven't found a need to switch over. IE has yet to give me any trouble and it just works. Just use some common sense and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Wow, I love me some Download Squad, but this post is so bitter it makes me sad. I suppose I've come to expect more out of this site. I don't think 1 post ruins it all, but I hope this doesn't start a trend.

I rarely every comment on these things, but this one deserves it: it's evident from this post that Drew Olanoff is an a-hole who doesn't understand business or marketing. No wonder he blogs for a living.
Sorry, Drew and DownloadSquad.com, but you're not earning any respect here.

Know what bugs me? The fact that Download Squad is the only blog on the web making a huge deal about a security bug. Wow. 8 million people have a single security hole. Tell me how many people got seriously messed up from this exploit.
Maybe its just that I'm tired and fussy, but the fact you keep dwelling on this bugs me.

take that picture down. its really digusting. not to mention it has no relevance to the post because nothing happened to firefox that should be illustrated as if it died. just the opposite. firefox got 8 million downloads in a day. thats still a success even if it still is number 2. i dont see how that picture fits in. maybe its just there for dramatic effect. which is stupid.

What an irresponsible post.
If I were the owner of this site, I'd be pretty pissed off.
You know how passionate and loyal Firefox users are and it just seems like you sadistically wrote this post to anger people knowing fully well that Firefox users would respond so it appears that your marketing ploy for negative attention was just as effective as Download Day was for Firefox.
You were able to drag me here to your whiny post all the way from a Google Alert in Thunderbird. Kudos to you.
At least Firefox users can pick a side and make solid choices whereas you seem to talk from both sides of your mouth.
Do you remember this post?
"Firefox shoots for world record, ladies and gents...start your bandwidth!"
Firefox users represent millions of people worldwide and they are typically tech savvy so be careful that you don't chase off the people clicking on this site's ads.
As I tell people from time to time when they complain about a particular site not rendering properly in Firefox, there are more than 64 million web sites online so you can easily find one to replace the one that you can't access and this holds especially true for technology sites like this one. We can always find another one.
Do you write posts just for a particular demographic? It would appear as so.
Why else would you alienate Firefox users?
I'm still a bit on the fence of whether or not I'm going to blacklist this site and rid myself of it forever. It does provide decent content, but not anything that I can't get elsewhere.

All world records have to start with an original event. I'm sure that other companies have thought of proposing this specific record; Mozilla just decided to step up and take their place as being known for the top downloaded product. Thanks to Mozilla, I'm certain that many other related records will pop up in the future. Way to go, Mozilla!

Olanoff is just nerd raging because he secretly has a crush on internet explorer. Find something that will break 8 mil downloads and write a new story bud, autoupdates dont count.

I thought downloadsquad was better than this. They need to fire this guy and have some filtering on what stories go through. Free speech and all, go do this in your personal blog, this is supposed to be a professional website delivering Professional news, not some crap from some apple fanboy.
