Change your Windows open/save dialogs with PlacesBar Editor

If you're worried about mucking up your system, you can take solace in the fact that PlacesBar Editor has a defaults button that will restore things to normal with the click of a button (two buttons, actually. You have to click defaults, and then save).
PlacesBar Editor also lets you add 5 additional folders or locations to the MS Office open/save dialog.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...

at least with vista, you can drag and drop the stuff in the places bar (now called favorite links). That's progress(ish) heh

can't even start me on vista...hate the new windows and cannot think that the most powerful company on earth has made the mistake to release such a horrific product...

It's a nice app...Though gpedit.msc does a pretty decent job of it as well! The truly hardcore can also do it in the registry - my writeup here!

Uh, you can do this with TweakUI (for XP) on Vista!
Make sure you run TweakUI in Windows XP compatibility mode though... (Right Click -> Properties)

Ah, unless it's like Melloware describes below... in which case, good find!
Though I actually don't see any "places" at all when I try saving in Notepad++.
I wish Microsoft would update its Powertoys for Vista already. :(

Not a very drastic change, is it? Either way, a thumbs-down to software that the 'default' is everything is the desktop, and not microsoft's defaults, and a HUGE thumbs-down to sofware that tries to take you to a donation page every time you run it.

thanks for the post here. I am the author of PlacesBar editor and just wanted to say a few things.
1. Yes you can edit the registry with regedit or any other app but you have to admit a lot of users out there wouldn't know the registry from the Recycle Bin.
2. I work at a company that GASP still uses Windows 2000 and Office XP. So for those of you that say "Oh Vista does this already" you have to admit a TON of users out there on Windows 2000 and XP still.
3. The new Vista features only work for applications that know to use the new Open/Save As. So while Notepad does, Photoshop CS3 and Notepad ++ still use the old dialog that PlacesBar Editor allows you to customize. You would be surprised how many older applications do not display the new Vista style open/Save As especially awesome applications like Notepad++ and UltraEdit. I find it very convenient to have my often used places there.
4. For the user complaining about the defaults, the reason they are defaulted to Desktop is because there ARE NO defaults. In windows you get the defaults if there are no registry entries present, so when you click revert to defaults I essentially erase your registry entries and leave it blank so it goes to the Windows defaults which are code in Windows. Give a try and see it for yourself.

What happened is that after I installed it, made some changes, I realized that it wasn't what I was looking for. So I set it back to defaults, and which made all of the shortcuts revert to my Desktop.
I can even send you pictures if you do not believe me.

I used to use http://dm2.sourceforge.net/ to access favourite folders from the open/save but of late have found http://www.codesector.com/directfolders.php a cleaner solution.
