DupliFinder: Find duplicate and similar images on your PC

Ever wish you could scan your entire photo directory to find and delete duplicate images? Sure, one or two pictures here and there might not take up that much space. But when you realize that you've accidentally stored your entire wedding album in three different folders, that's a whole different story. Of course, you don't want to start deleting images until you're absolutely certain they're identical. And that's where DupliFinder comes in.
This Windows-only utility will scan any directory (and optionally its subdirectories) and look for identical images. But that's not all. It will also look for images that are compositionally similar. As you can see in the screenshot, this means you won't just find exact copies of an image, but also pictures that look a little bit like your original image. This can come in handy if you're looking for another picture of your kid or dog to send to your parents. Or you know, if you're looking for a picture of a microphone.
It takes a while to scan large directories. And the open dialog is a bit awkward. You can either browser your My Pictures folder, or you can drag and drop a directory to DupliFinder from Windows Explorer. There's no way to navigate to folders outside of your My Documents directory with the browse feature.

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

I've used Dup Detector for years. Dup Detector 3.201 s at http://www.freeware-guide.com/rareware/DupDetector.html
Image Deduplicator is slow http://walidator.info/?s=deduplicator
There are a few commercial apps but Dup Detector is still the best for now.

There's other tools similar to this one that have been around for a few years now.
SimilarImages (http://celebnamer.celebworld.ws/similarimages/). This is the most similar in terms of function. Tell it where to look and it gives you a list of duplicate images based on some threshold. Windows only Freeware.
imgSeek (http://www.imgseek.net/). This is a collection manager first, but has the ability to search for similar images based on an initial image. It also allows for searching via sketch. That is, give it a rough sketch of the image you're looking for, and it finds similar images. Cross-platform Open Source (GPL). Windows binaries available.
ImageSorter (http://mmk1.f4.fhtw-berlin.de/?page_id=88/). This is the most dissimilar tool. What it does is display thumbnails of your images grouped together by similarity. Windows and OS X Freeware.
There may be more, but those are the three I have in my "neat apps I've downloaded" tree.

I tried these three apps on the same set of files, across one HD and several directories, roughly 750 images of different formats and sizes (duh!)
-- imgseek is (very) very hungry for CPU use... around 50%
-- whereas I found SimilarImage hungrier... at 99%
( I had Process Lasso kicking non-stop to restrain these out-of-control apps )
-- ImageSorter (beta!) never went above 6%
Now, what about German engineering?
I can't hear you.
Anybody? Anyone?

You said: "There's no way to navigate to folders outside of your My Documents directory with the browse feature" ??
So what good is that for "us" who do things differently?
Let me read again, the fine print from the beginning...

Instead of clicking the browser button, you have to physically drag and drop a directory from Windows Explorer onto your DupliFinder window. So you *can* open another directory. It's just a bit more of a hassle than it should be.

Dup Detector FTW, actually I have found it somewhat buggy. But it is the most efficient software and the fact that you can save data on a folder of images and update it makes it KING.

Find and delete similar and duplicate images and picturesVisual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder will find all similar and duplicate images in a folder and its sub folders. It uses advanced algorithms in order to find similar images in a way that a human does. Due to that fact it can find similar images even if they are in different image formats and sizes.
