Google App Engine launches; spaces already filled, scalability questioned

As we mentioned this morning, Google has launched a new preview of its hosted web app service, Google App Engine. So, how long does it take for 10,000 spots to fill? Well, we don't know for sure but at 10 AM EST, we were greeted with this image:

No Google App Engine for us!

Before sign-ups were officially closed, however, the scalability of App Engine was put to the test. Valleywag posted a user-submitted screenshot showing that the program used to generate sign-up applications (which was running on App Engine, itself) was over its alloted quota. We can understand that these types of things will happen -- especially right after that type of announcement -- but we can't help but laugh at the irony of App Engine not being able to run the App Engine sign-up program, especially since Google is touting scalability.

YouTube adds C-SPAN channel

Expanding its 2008 Presidential Campaign coverage, YouTube has teamed up with C-SPAN to collect videos from voters all over the country, asking "What is the most important issue to you in this election?" Videos will be aired on C-SPAN and the C-SPAN YouTube channel in the days leading up to the April 22 Pennsylvania primary.

Use Google Docs for social spreadsheets

The Google Docs blog has a really great post about using the spreadsheet application as a form of social data aggregation. In the entry, the author describes how she and some of her friends keep each other posted on what books, movies, restaurants and albums are worth checking out. She was then able to use this information to buy a gift for another friend.

Taking this one step further, imagine creating an aggregate "wish list" of sorts between a group of friend or family members. It could be a great way not only to suggest ideas for personal purchases, but could make buying gifts much, much more simple.
