Direct Folders: Add shortcuts to Windows save/open dialogs
Direct Folders is a Windows utility that makes it easy to find recent and frequently used folders in the save/open dialog. For example, if you regularly download files from the web and save them to a handful of folders (say, music, temp, installer files, images) you can create shortcuts using Direct Folders. Then when you click "save link as" in your web browser, just double click on the white space in the save as dialog to bring up a list of shortcuts. You can also find recently used folders by clicking the Recent button.
The application has a few other useful features as well. You can automatically resize all open/save dialog boxes to a predetermined size, set the default view (thumbnails, list, and so on), or change the sorting method. Direct Folders is free for home use, or you can pick up the pro version for €14.95 or about $24. The pro version adds an info panel, checks your hard drive free space, and lets you set default folders for each application.

Well.. I don't like seeing its icon in the system tray but the way it works is quite helpful.

Not being funny, but the MS open/save as dialogues are highly crap. They start in random directories when its quite obvious youve been working out of a particular project folder. No oppertunity to drag and drop to set folder locations. Really not the user friendly.
I will give this software a go, will probably be very useful - but this is really stuff that the OS should be dealing with!

very handy navigation tool. it is now in my "preferred software" folder. just double tap and a menu of your folders that you added in config setup is available. i can navigate even faster than using webcrumbs, or back button.
qt tabbar and qt addressbar which i discovered on lifehacker.com is excellent as well.

I haven't used Direct Folders, but I have used a similar product -- FileBox Extender -- for about 7 years (I paid for it when it was shareware, though it recently became freeware). It lets you set favourites (including favourite files, not just folders), and resizes the open/save/load/browse dialog boxes, but also adds a list of recently used folders, plus a keep-this-window-on-top pushpin.
And did I mention it's free?
Check out hyperionics.com (or search this blog, since I'm sure it has been mentioned here before).
