Add download folders to Firefox with FavLoc
FavLoc is one of those FireFox extensions that should really have been built into the web browser. What it lets you do is create a list of download folders that is easily accessible from the right-click menu in Firefox.
Normally when you want to download a link or file you can either just download it to your default folder or click "Save Link As" and browse to a folder. With FavLoc installed, you can choose from a list of predefined folders, no browsing necessary. For example if you always download programs to one location, music to another, and videos to a third, you can create three favorites and save yourself a lot of time.

Or you can use Download Sort and let Firefox save files to predefined folders based on file type.

Not everyone wants to save the files with the same extension in one folder though.

or you could use FlashGot to use a downloader of your choice. the shortcomings of Firefox's single threaded design is at it's worst with the way that the built in downloader brings it to a standstill so easily and so often.
Opera is far more advanced in this regard allocating a separate thread for each tab and it's built in downloader.

I've tried FavLoc... but I wound up using "Save Link in Folder". I like SLIF a little more because it gives you the option to edit locations at the bottom of its context menu.

Or just use Save Link in Folder, and Save Image in Folder if you want to just save images. With the two of them, I've never had an issue--they're very easy to edit and work with, and they'll even gray out a location if it doesn't exist (on an external hard drive that's not there temporarily, for instance), rather than opening up a dialog window that then freaks out on you. Those have been around for a while and do their job well. Don't think FavLoc is needed.
