AVG is ready to pull the trigger on their new Anti-Virus suite, AVG Anti-Virus 8.0. From first looks, it's going to be a pretty major update. For starters, AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 will offer more than its standard Anti-Virus protection. Popular tools AVG Anti-Spyware, AVG Anti-Rootkit, and LinkScanner, previously stand-alone applications, are now integrated into AVG Anti-Virus 8.0. The code base has seen a significant overhaul as well, in the hopes that inevitable system slowdowns caused by AVG's real-time protection will be lessened.
AVG Anti-Virus remains one of the most popular free Anti-Virus solutions on the market, and this update will no doubt solidify their dominance. At the time of this writing, however, it's not exactly clear if the free edition will be updated at the same time as the paid edition, so if you aren't one for waiting, you might have to pay to see 8.0.
The full version of AVG will continue to offer an enhanced feature set, including tech support, greater scheduling capabilities, and support for newer multi-processor core chips.
Look for the update Thursday.

As a guy who does Antivirus maintenance for 500+ machines daily, I can't exactly say that I am a fan of AVG. They have a high rate of false positives and let many in-the-wild exploits through. Avast! is a better free client, but still not good enough as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Symantec AV Corporate Edition (not Norton). I've used them all, and prefer NOD32 at home (cheap!) and SAV in the enterprise.

Sorry for the double-post; I forgot. Check out http://av-comparatives.org for raw, unbiased data that compares all the major antivirus products. AVG isn't the worst by any means, but when there are better free clients out there, it simply doesn't make the cut.

i run AVG on my XP EeePC but i have Norton 360 on my Vista desktop. i know everyone hates Norton. i did too. then i complained about it on a Facebook group and the right person read it and sent me a FREE copy of Norton 360. i have to say im quite impressed by the service as well as the product. i used to use NOD32 but i think Norton 360 is easier to use and faster.

I used AVG for quite a while, then discovered AVAST. AVAST proved more reliable with less false positives, built in intrusion detection, and email/IM/network stream scanning. I may look at AVGv8 - but doubt it will be more than a look.

One of the many benefits of Linux. I still dual boot XP, and I still get frustrated with antivirus programs bogging down resources and slowing down the system startup. Every time I turn XP on, it has to take 5 minutes downloading and updating the antivirus software. Nothing runs smoothly until that is done. I don't feel protected, I feel handicapped.
I do prefer Avast to AVG on XP. Its less annoying, if thats a pro.

I had issues with symanetec enterprise claiming a file was a trojan when it wasn't & refusing to not quarantine it, even after I disabled symantec. I'll have to try avast.

I never had a problem with AVG -- no false positives, nothing missed (that I'm aware of), and a biggie for me is that I can disable realtime scanning. I run a scheduled scan once a week or so, and if I download anything, I scan it before I run it. I have Prevx 2.0 on one machine, Symantec Corporate on another (from my school), and AVG on both -- I know it's bad to install multiple antivirus clients, but I turned off realtime scanning on all of them, and only sometimes use the one to "double check" the other.
Anyway, I'll look into Avast when I get a chance. I figure as long as it doesn't bog my system down, it won't hurt to have another option.

I've bounced back and forth between AVG and Avast and they're both very reliable and fairly lightweight. I noticed Avast had a lot of false positives on incoming Outlook mail on a couple of machines I installed it on for older users. Mostly with chain forwards.
I have AVG 7.5 Professional installed, and tried manually updating from within, but all it did was update the definitions like it does every day. It seems as though from Grisoft's site that the free version will not be updated to 8.0, at least not yet, but I don't know why 8.0 hasn't been pushed out to Professional versions yet. Granted I don't have the Suite, with the firewall (Comodo is great, and I never liked having 'all-on-ones').

Bought AVG 8.0 a few weeks ago - and it's terrible - not functioning properly (WebShield not working), blocking access to valid links and generally screwing up my system. Have logged tech support requests and have only gotten one notice in 4 days - staff completely non-responsive - not only does the product s__k, but the support is non-existant. Does anyone have some solid alternatives?

It seems AVG has launched an interesting ad campaign to go along with the new version - www.hugsforhackers.org - it's pretty hilarious, and already making a bunch of users on binary rev really angry.

Had Ad-Aware Plus - loved it - support stopped, upgraded to Ad-Aware 2007 - p.o.s. - felt robbed.
Ran lots of tests on AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 - worked good - bought it and got AVG 8.0 - hate it-hate it-hate it. It's like a bunch of marketing people got hold of decent software, got rid all the smart people that wrote it and are now hawking crap.

I had to upgrade from 7.5 to 8.0. I'm not using that Webshield because everything it touches turns to crap. AVG Customer/Tech support sucks hard. They're rank high among the worst. Other than the Webshield and Support issues, I guess the product works. I haven't had any other problems. I tried Zone Alert and it was nice but kept stopping. I have concluded that Windows Vista is just a piece of crap that doesn't work and play well with others.

I have AVG 7.5 . A box comes up saying it is time to upgrade to the version 8.0. Do I have to upgrade? Or is it best to just keep the 7.5 version? I have heard so many bad things about the 8.0 version I hate to mess up my computer if I upgrade. If I need to upgrade, could someone please tell me the steps to do so? Or is the 7.5 ok? I am running windows xp , the computer man who installed my 7.5 said I can upgrade and I asked him the steps but all he said that I COULD install if it I wanted to. It is set to run a scan everyday at 8am which is nice, but never found any problems. As someone said in another comment, if it isnt broke , dont fix it. If I need to upgrade, could someone please tell me the steps on how to do so? Thanks! :-)
