Vista SP1 is a bad dance partner for some applications
With all system updates, there's always a measure of good and bad. While most people are able to install updates without a hitch, all it takes is a quick perusal of the many tech forums online to see that the very same update wreaked irrevocable havoc on many user's machines. As luck would have it, Windows Vista SP1 is one of the updates that will cause some panic come release time. In fact, Microsoft has already begun to gather a list of applications that either experience a loss of functionality or stop working completely on machines with SP1 installed.
Vista SP1 will do you the favor of blocking certain software that has known compatibility issues with SP1. The list of blocked programs include such venerable and popular software as Trend Micro Internet Security and Zone Alarm Security Suite.
Programs with a loss of functionality include the New York Times reader and the Rising Personal Firewall.
We're hoping that these issues are taken care of before SP1 hits the masses; but in our experience, a list like this usually grows before it shrinks.
Ah, the smell of progress...

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

I can understand the AntiVirus apps breaking -- anything that hooks into the OS is tricky.
What's odd is the NYT Reader breaking -- since it's sitting on top of .NET 3.0. I thought .NET would isolate you from OS changes.

"The list of blocked programs include such venerable and popular software as Trend Micro Internet Security and Zone Alarm Security Suite...."
You make it sound like its just a bug or an innocent "oversight" and not Microsoft's well known method to force developers to pay their MSDN subscription dues.
Did you contact the people at Zone alarm? Are they, like all the "blocked" programs, behind in their subscription?

That sucks. I just heard about this on the Buzz Out Loud podcast. It seems like Microsoft can't get anything right with Vista. I think they should just scrap it and try again. Or just go back to XP and add and update that.
Looks like I'll keep waiting to get Vista. Maybe service pack 2 will be better.
Boom!

You really need to update this post. Most (all but 3 titles) of the software in question have new releases that DO work - they were linked right on the Microsoft Webpage you cited! Trend, ZoneAlarm, etc... still work fine with the updates.

"Ah, the smell of progress"
Realistically that's a pretty small list given the number of applicaions that run on Vista. But then again it can be difficult to write articles with perspective for M$ and Appl€ .. they're such easy targets and can be quite fun ;)

I have to agree, the list is pretty short with many if not most identified as now offering supported versions.
This post is a good warning to people to be aware but to declare "that will cause some panic come release time" is simply pandering to the kewl kids who find it fun to bad-mouth Vista.
I'm happy with my Vista and it's playing well with others (read XP boxes) on the LAN thank you. .
