GreenPrint - new free edition saves you money and saves the trees
GreenPrint software launched a new free edition today to help home users and non-profits reduce home and office printing waste. Known as GreenPrint World edition, this edition has fewer features than other versions and includes advertising. The software works by analyzing every page of a document sent to the printer, and looks for banner ads, pages with just a logo or URL, legal jargon, etc., and then highlights and removes them before they ever reach the printer. You can also remove images with a click.
According to GreenPrint, users can save up to $90 per year and eliminate 1,400 wasted pages. In addition, the software quantifies your toner and paper savings in a nice report which you can review to help you feel better about all the trees you are saving. The company estimates that with widespread use GreenPrint can save 100 million trees and reduce greenhouse gasses by over 30 million tons globally.
We're all for technology which helps save trees and automates mundane tasks helping to make your printing sort of idiot proof. It's a big step in the right direction, however, there is just so much software can do. We continue to recommend print preview as an important part of your ongoing safe printing practice.

Yes PDF docs are good things, but some time we must print. This is useful program.

It is an interesting idea but the free version is REALLY slow. It feels like I'm going to waste a huge amount of time every time I print something just so that every once in a while I don't get an extra page.
What would be more useful is if instead of just dropping the last page if it has a few lines on it, it would shrink the whole document so it fit on one less page. If I'm printing a document, I probably want to be able to read the whole document, not all of it except the last 2 lines. If it could automatically take a 3 page document with 2 lines on the last page, shrink it to 98% and make it a 2 page document, that would be really cool.

Printing is so last century. Get rid of the printer at home or at least throw it in the closet. That will save more paper than anything else.

Today I went to the Green Print site to look into downloading, and I was immediately and repeatedly notified about infection by the "downloader" trojan horse virus. Folks might want to be careful about downloading at this time.

We're really excited here at GreenPrint about the launch of GreenPrint World because we think there is so much potential for a significant environmental impact to occur if we can get lots of people using the program.
To address Barbara's concern from above -
We've just received an update from our CTO on the Google malware alert. It turns out someone inserted a malicious iframe on the index page. We've removed it and taken additional security measures to make sure our site is now safe.
Thanks to everyone for letting us know about the problem so we could get it resolved as quickly as possible. Our intention is of course to provide a high quality safe program for everyone to use.
Cheers,
Karina
