Looking for an inexpensive (read: free) alternative to the CD/DVD burning utilities currently dominating the market? BurnAware Free looks to fill that space nicely. BurnAware is a free utility that enables you to perform most common disc burning tasks:
- Burn data to most any type of disc, including DVD+R and DVD-R
- Create audio CD's from WAV, mp3, or WMA files
- Create disk images (.ISO's)
- Write DVD video files (e.g. VOB files) to a DVD
An added bonus of BurnAware is support for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats (provided that you have the appropriate drive, of course). Though BurnAware supports both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, we found it peculiar that it only advertises Blu-Ray support. A pointed jab at HD-DVD, or simply an oversight? Only time will tell...
BurnAware Free is currently in beta, with support for Windows 98/NT/2000/XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit).

Drag-and-drop for adding files is preferred, but this still looks slick. And free. Double great.
This is a field in Windows dominated by commercial software such as Nero. For me, back in my Windows days, CDBurnerXP probably did the best job for assorted kinds of writing out of the freeware crowd. Burrrn was a no-brainer for audio CDs. Nero couldn't touch the simplicity and true gapless burning.
Now, for Linux, I think Brasero knocks the pants off K3B. The folks at Ubuntu love it too and are making it the default burning application in Hardy Heron.
I'll keep a lookout on BurnAware for whenever I'm around the spawn of Redmond again. Thanks.

Does anyone know if this program will copy non-copyright protected cds and dvds? I think you can with CDBurnerXP, but I haven't used that one in a while.

CDburner xp has been doing this for awhile, it's freeware as well. Haven't ever heard of this one, I might give it a try.

Is there any reason to use e.g. Nero over this, if all you ever do is create CDs/DVDs full of arbitrary files, or video DVD backups (ripped with e.g. DVDShrink)? I know Nero has a boatload of addons like video converters or backup schedulers, but I never use any of that stuff. I might just drop Nero altogether in favor of something free like this.
