Google: Free IMAP for everyone
You'll need to use the English interface in order to see your IMAP settings. But Google plans to add the option to all languages in the next few weeks.
Why does IMAP matter again? Because unlike POP, IMAP supports back and forth communication between your offline email client and Gmail. If you set up your iPhone, Outlook, or Thunderbird client to read your Gmail using IMAP, every time you read a message it will be marked as read on the web interface. If you delete a message on your desktop, it will be deleted from the web. If you use POP, you'll have to repeat all of those actions twice.

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

Dave - you need to make sure you're language settings are English (US) first, then the imap settings should be there.
Hope this helps.

you have to select the English (US) language.
English (UK) won't work.

I got it today. First time I made an IMAP account ever. I like the idea of having my mails stored in one place but is it suppose to be that slow. Every time I click a folder in Thunderbird I have to wait 20/30 seconds before it stops loading.

Any clients that we know of support Labels or the Archive function? For that matter, does the IMAP protocol have any way of handling that sort of thing?

IMAP makes it REALLY easy to move all of your email from an older account in Outlook or wherever to gmail, all while retaining the date stamps.
No more tools. :)

If only Outlook didn't handle IMAP so badly!

@Griesmeelpap It only does that the first time you open the folder because it is queuing the message titles.

Really important for people who still don't see the POP/IMAP option in their gmail settings.
I still haven't got the IMAP option in my GMAIL settings view. I got frustrated as my language option was always English.
I just tried accessing my account through IMAP by changing settings in my Thunderbird client. It worked like a charm. I still don't have the IMAP option in my settings but the IMAP works perfectly. So if you are frustrated like me and have been checking the IMAP option to pop up ever since it was announced by Gmail try this.

Comments 2 & 3 (flowwolf & dave)... thanks for the advice... i'll give it a go... but i ain't happy about it. does that mean i'll have to change my spelling when i send e-mails e.g.
colour = color
***ise = ***ize
***night = ***nite
neighbour = neighbor
Tomato = toe-may-toe
Potato = Pot-art-toe
ahhhh! there's just too many to mention!

Works like a charm on Chatter Mail (for Palm Treo). I don't use it with Outlook as Outlook's support of IMAP is horrible. I use Google Apps for personal e-mail and calendar and Outlook for work. I would move work mail to Google Hosted Apps, but Outlook with with Tagolocity gives me better tagging which has become critical to my workflow.
The problem with Google's labels is that it is laborious to apply multiple labels to one e-mail. I don't know why they don't make the Gmail interface for tagging/labels more like Google Bookmarks.
Also, you can't tag/label calendar items, contacts, etc. Don't really need it for personal info, but for work Taglocity has given me a powerful project/matter/client management system that works better for my needs, for less money, than MS Business Contact Manager, and similar CRM and project/task add ons.

Why the photon do I have to switch to English US to get this to work? What is wrong with English UK?

Nice thing about this imap stuff, is you can add folders to your gmail and upload all your old emails for archiving it all to a folder.
With Thunderbird all I have to do is drag and drop...
