Apple: 1 weekend, 2 million copies of Leopard sold

Apple today announced that it has sold 2 million copies of OS X 10.5 since launching Leopard on Friday. Who knew there were 2 million Mac users out there? Just kidding. No, seriously.

That figure includes copies of the OS sold through retail stores, Apple's online store, and copies delivered as part of maintenance agreements.

The bigger question is if this is a sort of blockbuster release. Everyone who wants Leopard will have rushed out to buy it on opening weekend. And next week the sales will slump significantly. Our guess is that the first weekend sales don't necessarily predict the overall success of an operating system. Rather, they indicate the degree to which the public bought the hype surrounding an operating system.

Last year Microsoft said they expected 200 million computers would have Windows Vista installed by the end of 2007. As of this week, the company has sold just 88 million licenses, which is still higher than many people had predicted.

I can see why there are so many sales. It's a great OS. Most of the improvements that I use on a daily basis are under the hood.
1. If you disconnect from a network share improperly it doesn't beach ball
2. If a finder window crashes it doesn't bring down your entire system.
3. The system feels faster and more responsive... though I haven't benchmarked.

Any Tiger user who upgraded must be dumb.

Leopard offers little more, than just Time Machine.

3D dock? I bet they copied Sun's Looking Glass.

Transparent-like menu bars? They look pretty gruesome in OS X.

Parental Controls? Wasn't that already in Vista?

Spaces is basically a rip-off of the same thing in Linux.

Seriously, any "smart" Tiger user should wait for the next one.

It's funny how fanboys think Leopard is worth upgrading to, compared to XP uses who should upgrade to Vista.

Hey, for Apple - 2 million is a hit. It took Tiger six weeks to sell as many copies :)

Civiballs is a beautiful, soothing physics puzzle Time Waster

I have an absolute weakness for physics games, and while Civiballs isn't the strongest physics-based game, what it lacks in the physics department it makes up for a few times over in style and fun.

In Civiballs, you are presented with a few colored balls, and your goal is to get those balls into the same-colored urn on the level. The "civi" part of Civiballs is that there are 3 sets of levels to play, each representing a different civilization. While the civilization doesn't affect gameplay, the artwork for each level is beautifully themed to it's appropriate era.

To play the game, you are given only one tool - a sword with which to cut the chains that are holding the balls. The puzzle part of the game is in figuring out what order, and with what timing to cut each chain. Do it right, and all the right balls end up in the right urns, with no stray balls entering an urn (a no-no). Do it wrong, and you get to start over again.

Civiballs is not terribly deep on gameplay; the entire game can be completed in about 15 minutes. But if you enjoy this type of game, it will be a very enjoyable 15 minutes.
