YouTube getting a redesign, sunglasses needed

The YouTube team has a surprise in store, a YouTube redesign is in the works. Please get your sunglasses ready though, it tends to be a little hard on the eyes.

YouTube will incorporate user feedback into the changes throughout the site. That's something that a lot of companies neglect to take into account when undertaking website changes. Over the next few months new additions will be rolled out, and will include improved categories, dropdown menus to get to where you want faster, and a new look and feel for tabs and video browsing pages.

All that new red seems a little too distracting for us, and the dropdowns can be a little distracting, but it does seem quicker to get around the redesign.

Thank god for Greasemonkey which will reverse the hideous changes. The red will take away from the videos. YouTube needs to take some point from the deviantART design squad. They keep everything solid with no bright colors so that we can keep our eyes on what is important - the art. Google is just taking away from the YouTube experience with this one.

And I second the higher quality videos. You can't watch videos on YouTube fullscreen most of the time due to quality issues. =\ They need to upgrade their max resolution and seriously upgrade the max video size. I'm sure Google wouldn't even notice the server hit if video sizes doubled and neither would most users. Yes, we would be leaving dial-up and slow DSL users in the past but seriously, how are we ever supposed to advance to the point of Finland or Japan or Sweden when we still have users using 56K? Services need to stop catering to these and improve the user experience of the majority.

Ever since Google bought YouTube, I wasn't really happy with the results.

It seemed more bad things came out than good things.

As far as I still know, videos are still low-res and awful, the site itself still looks awful (but with a slight touch-up), and more videos get banned and users get banned every day over the dumbest things. That's YouTube for you.

Unfortunately, most average users don't care, and continue to use it. The only thing that still keeps me tied to YouTube is the tons of user content that's been established there for years.

I find these 3 other video sites give online user videos justice:

MSN Video : http://video.msn.com/

Viddler : http://www.viddler.com/

These 3 sites give much more higher-res videos, a better site to work on, better ease of use, more tools to work when viewing videos, and a ton more things than YouTube has.

Just keeping people's options open...

Google Video allows people to download (most) videos easily.

Google owns YouTube.

YouTube does not have a download option.

Why?

For all the Google bashers... Didn't Google promise a high degree of autonomy for YouTube?

Looking at the revamped site it looks nice, but i personally like the darker look as opposed to the all white and blue, it just hurts! But no matter what it looks like, YouTube will always be the place to watch crappy quality videos!

Civiballs is a beautiful, soothing physics puzzle Time Waster

I have an absolute weakness for physics games, and while Civiballs isn't the strongest physics-based game, what it lacks in the physics department it makes up for a few times over in style and fun.

In Civiballs, you are presented with a few colored balls, and your goal is to get those balls into the same-colored urn on the level. The "civi" part of Civiballs is that there are 3 sets of levels to play, each representing a different civilization. While the civilization doesn't affect gameplay, the artwork for each level is beautifully themed to it's appropriate era.

To play the game, you are given only one tool - a sword with which to cut the chains that are holding the balls. The puzzle part of the game is in figuring out what order, and with what timing to cut each chain. Do it right, and all the right balls end up in the right urns, with no stray balls entering an urn (a no-no). Do it wrong, and you get to start over again.

Civiballs is not terribly deep on gameplay; the entire game can be completed in about 15 minutes. But if you enjoy this type of game, it will be a very enjoyable 15 minutes.
