Pidgin 2.2 flies the coop

Multi-protocol instant messaging client Pidgin has hit version 2.2. And when they say multi-protocol, they mean it. Pidgin supports AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, and Zephyr. In other words, there's a good chance this open-source program is the only instant messaging client you'll ever need to install on your Windows or Linux PC. There are a bunch of updates since the last release. One of our favorites is the return of optional protocol icons which make it easy to tell which of your friends are using MSN Messenger, and which are using AIM (and so on). Here are some of the other changes:
- Yahoo! Chat is fixed
- AIM file transfer issues fixed
- Properly restore idle status time for AIM and ICQ accounts that reconnect after being disconnected
- Remember "enable sounds" setting for a conversation

been using it for a couple of days now and i don't think my idle time is working properly :( goes inactive after 5 minutes even when i'm feverishly typing away or using my mouse :/
is it just me?

Pidgin was formerly known as Gaim until AOL made them change the name.

it's ok, but it's not as good as the original programs who's protocols it supports. Linux needs a REALLY good IM and pidgin is only so so.

Used to be a GAIM user but was turned off by the arrogance of the developers in dealing with some of the program's earlier showstopper bugs. There were instances where it simply wouldn't work for anyone, and rather than apologise for the inconvenience it caused or be in any way diplomatic about what had happened, there'd be some crassly blunt entry on the blog instead. Your typical sociopathic UNIX developer stuff. Now I do realise it's free software and that we were all just 'along for the ride' here, but these guys are looking to get bought out and clear their mortgages same as everyone else. So they need to help build the community rather than look down at it. Long story short, I switched to using Mirada which is cleaner, faster and all-round nicer anyway. www.miranda-im.com

I use this at work, and it's great. I'm considering switching to it at home, instead of Trillian, which I currently use there. Have to start digging into it and see if it has all the same features I need. Mainly support for file transfers as well as a single away setting for all clients.

I am using it for a while now, and what poor quality it has. Mostly i use gTalk protocol and it crashes a lot(if I copy text from somewhere) + file transfers doesn't work(sometimes if someone tries to send a file and cancels it, then it crashes too)+ random crashes. If i think about it, why am i using it, if it makes my head hurt? Oh well.. hellouu Miranda!
(Oh, and when u update the client, custom smiley sets disappear without any warning)
