You tip the pizza man, you don't tip the Fed Ex driver. You tip the bartender at the pub, and you don't tip the McDonald's clerk; but you do tip the barrista at Starbuck's. The United States has ritualistic levels of tip etiquette, which admittedly don't exist other places in the world but, the question remains; Why don't we tip our IT service people?
You know just as well as we do, you couldn't function without your computer. You'd find yourself on the floor in a fetal position, crying and sulking if your PC were to decide to go AWOL at any particular moment. And, much like a herion user out for another fix, you'd wipe your tears and head to the nearest coffee shop with pay access machines to obsessively check your email. We understand, we'd do much the same thing ourselves. If your computer is that important to the fluid function of your day-to-day life, why wouldn't you slip the IT guy a little extra to make sure you get top priority next time you pick up the phone and scream Mayday?
Perhaps it's something in the way we view our IT guys. Nerdy, socially inept, awkward in ways your high school science teacher could have never achieved. Maybe it's time we took a fresh look at the value our IT service men and women make life a little easier; And, even if we don't offer them a tip.. maybe a hug wouldn't be so bad?

Heh. The only IT service people I've been in contact with have been IT departments in workplaces or ISP tech support. All have been, almost universally, idiots. Where I currently work, I know more about IT than the people who get paid twice my salary to know about it. So forgive me if I don't feel the need to tip. ;)

Companies need to pay their own employees.
Besides, as #1 pointed out, most IT people are idiots.

People are tipping baristas at Starbucks now? That's just crazy talk. I tip delivery drivers if I know they really went above and beyond to get my packages (especially at unaccommodating times).
At my old job, we took the IT folks out for drinks every Friday. It always made sure that we were a priority whenever we needed them.

The underlying rule at the root of tipping is that you tip your social inferiors. Since IT is generally considered a professional service, you don't tip them any more than you would tip your lawyer.

You only tip people who are "beneath" you; it is charity to people who are too stupid or unskilled to actually get a job where their employer respects them enough to give them a livable wage. IT service workers presumably are skilled and paid well enough that they don't need tips to earn a salary.

How about because most IT workers are as dumb as a sack of hammers and already have a sense of entitlement big enough to fill up a football field, all because Microsoft makes such bad software and used its monopoly power to make sure everyone was forced to rely on it?

Love to see the comments about IT people being dumb and idiots. Talk about envy.
If the idiots and dumb are making at least double, what does it say about you?
Thought so.

So then, if we tip our social inferiors, then by that logic why not tip the McDonald's clerk? By not tipping them are we acknowledging that McDonald's cerks are *not* socially inferior? (ok, fine, I am a McDonald's clerk :P)

"Why don't we tip IT service people?..."
Aaaaaaaaaaaaa, let's see. Because they make ten times ( twenty times? ) more money than I do a year, and they act so condescending towards my honest questions.

Because most of them are located overseas and can barely speak enough English to provide adequate support.

Nobody should ever get a tip unless they go above and beyond. Otherwise you should be fairly compensated for the job you do and that should be built into the cost of the item or service. Employers should not use tipping as an excuse for underpaying their employees.

Hi Markus.
Yes, you're right. I am envious of our IT staff. They make twice what I make even though they're idiots and don't work anywhere near as hard as I work.
That does not, however, make me an idiot. By your rationale, we're all stupider than Britney Spears.
Don't feel bad about losing. I simply think more clearly than you. By the way, I advise against making galling spelling/grammar errors in a post that intimates other people are idiots; it's the embarrassing kind of irony, wouldn't you say?

Huw, when you make a swipe at another's diction, know what you're talking about.
And, yes, you are stupid, because your chosen
career makes you barely able to pay your cable
bill.
Don't be jealous that we make more, have higher IQ's, and laugh at you scrubs when we're on vacation. Be a hater at suck my Lexus' tailpipe.

wait, what? Sorry, but IT people I know have never made more than me. Would I tip them? Some yes, some no. Yes, there are some that are as dumb as a bag of hammers, but there are also some extremely bright ones. But you'll find that in any profession. They also usually work their tails off, coming into the office when I sure as hell wouldn't want to be there. Exchange upgrade scheduled for 2 AM? No thanks. For that, I am very grateful for the people in IT.
That said, Markus, please, get over yourself. While I am very appreciative of every IT staff I have ever worked with, none of them know as much as I do (CS degree). And when I DO have problem because of the wonky scripts they run to move my home folder around, they throw around buzzwords to try and mask that they have no idea why something is messed up. It fools most people because they simply don't know better and don't care, but don't try to come off like IT have some gift that most just can't hope to wrap their head around; they don't, and most of the time they're just blowing hot air.

Too bad all that money can't buy you any maturity.
It's comments like that that give IT people their bad (but clearly deserved) reputation.

Well I won't say I have never been tipped for a job well done - but it is rare. That is simply because techs are usually making more than a hundred bucks for the hour - do you tip your plumber or electrician?
But hey as with any service if you are extremely satisfied - tip away for a job well done!

Well I work for a local computer repair company.
I have been fixing pc's for about 20 years now. In an average month I get about 10-50 bux in tips!. We don't have a cheesey tip cup out, like when you would expect to see when you pay for a over-priced cup of coffee. I presonally try my best to go out of the way, and above and beyond to help EVERY customer. but I am also in Las Vegas! so most of the mind set here is to tip and you will get better service...
For me getting a tip for my comptuer is still kinda forign to me cos Ihave never recivied a tip for ANY job I have done, but I do appericate it. Especially when it's close to payday! :)
Now to the question should you tip:
Well i PERSONALLY see 2 major factors if you are gonna tip me:
1. as a bribe (before work starts).... Hey joe tech here's 20 bux can you be quick with my computer....
