While the web services aren't grouped into the usual solid, liquid, gas, and synthetic categories, you do have search engines, internet tools, site ranking, aggregators, webcomics, productivity and so on.
Of course, any attempt to actually index the internet so that you can see the whole thing on one page is bound to fail. There are thousands of sites you may visit every day that aren't included. But it's fun to look at.
What are your favorite attempts to graphically represent the web?

Check out Lisa Jevbratt’s 1:1 project, “a project created in 1999 that consisted of a database that would eventually contain the address of every Web site in the world and interfaces through which to view and use the database.”

Is there any moral to this story or just a cool graphic?

Actually, many inaccuracies.
First of all, Cnn.com and NYTimes.com are inert and NOBLE gas?!? Hardly - They are the most active instigators in the political realm of the internet. (represented as Neon and Argon - Ne Ar)
Google and Homestarrunner.com are very likely compounds. I think not. (Represented as Litium and Fluorine - respectively - LiF)
MySpace (or Facebook) and ThisLife.org - I dont see this as a very likely compound. However CO2 and SiO2 are very readily forming compounds in nature.
So overall, this is a bit off and probably not a good way to represent the internet.

I would have thought that Google gets the hydrogen slot: The most common element in the internet universe.
Either that or spam.

This is a great way to show who the major players in web 2.0 currently are, and as a viral blogger, where to spend your time.
