Switching to Mac: Download Squad Switcher Podcast #2

While Steve Jobs has been busy dropping "computer" from Apple's name and pushing out iPod after iPod, the company is still probably best known by loyal fans as a computer maker.

Unlike Windows PCs, Apple controls the hardware and software that goes onto every Macintosh, meaning they have a reputation for working the instant you plug them in. No struggling to make all the parts play nice together.

But while Macs have a loyal fan base, it's still a PC world, and there's plenty of software out there that just won't run on a Mac.

Today we speak with Download Squad's Jason Clarke and Lisa Hoover about their recent decisions to become full time Mac users. Both are experienced Windows users who have switched to Mac for one reason or another. We wanted to find out why, and to share their wisdom with you.

Great podcast! Enjoyed the kids in the background.

But now I officially hate you. Because I was *this close* to finally settling on a Windows laptop, and now I'm going to have to consider a MacBook again...

I had been a Windows user since I left DOS kicking and screaming many years ago. Last year when I got into some heavy video editing, every day was a struggle just to not experience a crash. I decided to try Vista and all I was able to mumble during that little adventure was "Five years and this is what they came up with?" I had the same experience as Lisa with the user access control. That's what sent me over the edge.

I snapped and ordered a Mac Pro. I had NEVER used a Mac before and if it didn't live up to all the hype my Mac friends were feeding me somebody was going to get hurt. A year later and now I also own a MacBook Pro. My little world of video editing is very calm and so am I.

Great podcast guys, I could soooo relate!

Featured Time Waster

Civiballs is a beautiful, soothing physics puzzle Time Waster

I have an absolute weakness for physics games, and while Civiballs isn't the strongest physics-based game, what it lacks in the physics department it makes up for a few times over in style and fun.

In Civiballs, you are presented with a few colored balls, and your goal is to get those balls into the same-colored urn on the level. The "civi" part of Civiballs is that there are 3 sets of levels to play, each representing a different civilization. While the civilization doesn't affect gameplay, the artwork for each level is beautifully themed to it's appropriate era.

To play the game, you are given only one tool - a sword with which to cut the chains that are holding the balls. The puzzle part of the game is in figuring out what order, and with what timing to cut each chain. Do it right, and all the right balls end up in the right urns, with no stray balls entering an urn (a no-no). Do it wrong, and you get to start over again.

Civiballs is not terribly deep on gameplay; the entire game can be completed in about 15 minutes. But if you enjoy this type of game, it will be a very enjoyable 15 minutes.
