Google Maps adds public transit info, trip planner

Google Maps transitGoogle's been adding little mass transit icons to their maps for a while. And sure, it's great to be able to look at a map and see that a train or bus stops at an intersection, wouldn't it be nice to know which train or bus?

Google has rolled out the ability to click on a transit icon to get more info about that stop. Data will vary depending on which public transportation system you're looking at.

If you happen to live in one of the dozen cities currently covered, you can also plan trips using the experimental Google Transit. The service doesn't yet cover major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington or Boston (you can use HopStop to plan trips in those cities). But Google Transit looks promising. Not only does it provide step by step instructions for taking public transportation, it also includes the fares.
