Yahoo! launches web-based Yahoo! Messenger
The folks over at Yahoo! don't want you to download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger. That's not a typo. They've launched a web-based version of the instant messaging client. The new client opens in a web browser window and is available to anyone with a Yahoo! account.
What are the benefits of a web-based messenger?
- You can access your account from any computer without installing software or changing account settings.
- Your company's IT department probably won't be able to block you from spending all day messaging your friends instead of working.

Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger are cross-compatible now.

While this seems to be more of a full featured web client, yahoo has always had a web version of their messenger available at wap.oa.yahoo.com. While mostly for mobile phones/pda's i've found it to be great for use on my colleges campus that blocks the regular yahoo messenger from signing in.

I doubt Yahoo is saying dont install the client. It is just to give you another option when you might be using a computer that wont let you install the client. Hense saying "IM from any browser, Anywhere!"..
