It's official, Dell to ship Ubuntu loaded PCs this month
Rumblings and rumors surrounding pre-installed Ubuntu on Dell machines have been flying over the last few days, and it looks like the rumors are true. According to Desktop-Linux, Dell will begin shipping systems with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, and -- finally -- without Windows (or the cost of a Windows license). Ubuntu senior support engineer Fabian Rodriguez wrote, "Many people have been involved in this and I can only say I am excited to be a tiny small part of it: Ubuntu will be officially supported on Dell computers. Any other details will come on www.ubuntu.com, check it for the official press release, but we can now all put the matter to rest and go about our normal lives - or can we?"
If you're reading this while brushing your teeth and preparing to head in to work at Microsoft, you might want to call in sick; We can't imagine it's going to be a very upbeat day around the campus. Hey, cheer up! Ubuntu is hiring, and spending the afternoon at the movies might give you a chance to clear your head.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...

This post makes me laugh. Everyone knows that Dell ships Linux just because they don't want to eat their own words.
Who the hell believes that Dell really believes in the credibility of the poll on ideastorm? Congrats to those Linux advocators who raided the site a while ago.

@Fred
It doesn't matter how cynical of a spin you put on Dell's move, the point is they are going to install linux on their machines.
I swear to God, if they don't do it, you guys cry foul; if they do do it you guys still cry foul. There's no winning with people like you

@Sarmad Siddiqui:
Yeah, and I guess everytime you read anything critical by anyone anywhere, you feel the deep desire to respond with a post like the one you just blessed us with: "Must... think... positive!"

Fred - you seriously think that a huge multinational corporation is run by people not smart enough to read the server log and see that the IdeaStorm board has been "stuffed" by a handful of "fanboys"? You really think that?
I know its a bitter pill to swallow, but Microsoft's monopoly is dying, and the easy days of riding on Bill's coat tails to earn a living are over. All the programmers I know are now learning Ruby on Rails and Googles toolkit - because there are no new requests for Windows desktop development.
Linux, Mac, Windows, whatever, people may have whatever OS makes them happen now, because the desktop is dead.

Can I request Kubuntu? I love KDE and can't stand anything else.

Just tossing my $.02... I have been getting my machines from Tigerdirect, and have them come blank (no OS or license) so I can drop Ubuntu on them when they get here. At a minimum, I appreciate the fact that now I could just order a machine and not have any REAL setup when I get it. Say what you like, but Dell distributing with Ubuntu will likely change MY buying habits.

good lord. Idea Storm may be stuff to the gills with fanboys... but it pales in comparison to the writing staff of this forum.
4,000 "votes" on idea storm means jack in long term for Dell. So does 100,000 PC sales with linux...as Dell will probablly make LESS money with linux on it's boxes thanks to how much everyone's willing to pay to preroll applications on Windows with dell.

I bet there's legitimate votes for most of them...and i also bet that a large number of linux geeks can figure out how to easily hide their voting habits from server logs. That's like saying "how DARE you accuse this car expert of being able to install NOS!"

@dirt:
With Ubuntu, you can install "kubuntu-desktop" which will download and automatically install KDE on any Ubuntu system. So if Dell doesn't offer Kubuntu preinstalled, you'll have to deal with Gnome for - oh, about 10 minutes.

Hopefully the Dell (i.e rebranded Lexmark) printers will work with Feisty now!

No, not usually. Though it does get really annoying when a company is doing something good and people bitch about it for no reason.
