With so many great webmail offerings out there, only two are considered the frontrunners. Yahoo, the oldest player, has just revamped with unlimited storage and some drag and drop interface changes, while Google has the threaded simplicity thing going on adding built in Chat, Doc, Calendar, and Spreadsheet applications with a less cluttered appearance. In this battle, who is the real leader? Veronica Belmont from Cnet put up both Yahoo Mail and Gmail up to the test on which one of these AJAX email applications is the leader. She weighs in and compares all of the strengths and weaknesses of both services in interface design, features, speed, organization, and security to come up with the end winner.

I deal with business contacts from the public constantly, and I see far more hotmail addresses than yahoo addresses. In fact, I can't remember the last time I ran into somebody still using yahoo (other than forged spam headers, LOL).

Hotmail? You must be joking.Hotmail (now "Windows Live Mail",for the most part) is the most clunky, unreliable webmail around.I have an old hotmail account that I still check from time to time, and it takes several minutes just to log in,usually,on a fast DSL connection! Gmail normally takes 2 seconds, and is VERY reliable with a very user friendly interface and a ton of space.Yahoo mail is slightly slower at times, but still MILES beyond hotmail or any other webmail service I've seen.

My mom, of all people, has been using Yahoo for a couple of years. She's fine with it -- she's very "non-technical". I'm a Gmail fanatic, but when I was visiting the other day, I noticed a Yahoo feature I'm a bit envious of: multiple logins. My mom and dad both have a Yahoo address, and they can switch inboxes with a single mouse click; no re-authentication, no sign-out-sign-in cycle, they just click "Change to XXX@yahoo.com" and the other inbox appears. This would be *really* nice on shared family computers at home.

I've used Gmail for quite a while, but think the new Beta of AOL's webmail is superior to either one mentioned.

I have to say that the match was a little unfair to Yahoo. I am a Y-mail plus user and am part of the a public group that participates in the beta public discussion and Yahoo is still constantly adding features to mail and is still a work in progress. The version she was using wasnt even the lastest version, and there is quite a difference. Yahoo IM, RSS Feeds, and an excellent calandar strip along the bottom. Its not complete with notebook and full calandar yet, but its getting there....I have a Google account too, but I just dont care for its interface. I pay 20.00 a year for add free, web based email with awesome spam filters and Yahoo is the best in my opinion....

I use yahoo premium only because i got it free with my Verizon fios internet service. I get constant spam on it all the time. i get up to 20 messages from Flowgow a day. apparently someone might of had my e-mail address at one time and had the newsletter from Flowgow. I never asked for that. The e-mail address is only 2 weeks old. I haven’t even had a chance to use it really. Not even to e-mail a friend. I still use Hotmail.
And I still don’t even get that much spam using Hotmail. My favorite spam from yahoo is attractive Russian woman looking for a man. And the famous. Someone died and left someone a lot of money and they want to use your bank account to transfer it with a handsome reward. I still can’t believe they are still trying that scam!

Windows Live Mail wouldn't be too bad if it worked correctly with Firefox/Camino/Safari/Opera etc, etc... but it doesn't, Microsoft has purposefully locked people into using IE to get all the features... again.
GMail however, I use all day every day, its superb, and much more simple (and less clunky) than any other competitor.
Jim :)

I would take anything that comes from Veronica Belmont mouth with a grain of salt or simply disregard it completely. I've listen to her show many times and she makes judgments base on with the tech clique says is cool, so I knew the outcome of this battle before it even started. Gmail is the winner reported by Miss "the cool kids said so" Belmont. Why waste your time and the reader/viewers time if you know you already have a bias.

Well, last time I heard the podcast it was the time when there was a rumor that Microsoft was willing to buy Yahoo. And, Ms. Belmost commented "Why yahoo!? Buy us". That was something very interesting given the fact that cnet.com is not doing that great on the financial side they are trying to generate bias reports to win favor from Mountain View guys in hope they'd buy them for 2-3 billions dollars. And about the mail comprison it depends on how people want to use it. I personally feel that yahoo mail is hte best webmail. new hotmail comes second. India's rediffmail that provides unlimited mail for last 1 year is 3rd. It has more features that gmail. the only thing google is good at is: PR.

For changing the alternative address you need not reenter your password in gmail.Making advantage of this one of my colleague added his email as the alternative address. Moreover gmail provides you with an option to forward your mail to some other email and this can be dangerous because you need not reenter your password for doing this.
