Dell and Linux - the people's choice
elp right its slide in sales, Dell is reaching out to consumers for input on products and services at a website called Idea Storm. So far, the suggestion getting the most votes is the one that offers one of the 3 top free Linux versions pre-installed on all Dell PCs.
The second vote getter is having Open Office, an open source alternative to Microsoft Office pre-installed on your machine. My favorite idea on the list, though, was saying no to foreign tech support! What do our readers think of the people's choice so far?

.
Dell offers a Linux-configured machine with the appropriate drivers in place, but requires the purchase of Fedora with it. This misses the whole point of open source software.
I believe sales would improve if it was offered pre-configured with the Ubuntu package, I don't think there is much Linux crapware out there, but if there is Dell should avoid it.

I like the idea, and I'm glad Dell is giving us the chance to voice our opinions. The site needs to be better moderated and organized, but overall it's a good start.
Now if they only listen......

For anyone interested, I put together a chart that compares the features and “Digg-like”-ness of the three new voting platforms by Yahoo, Dell, and Microsoft:

My personal favorite is getting rid of bundled software. I HATE BUNDLED SOFTWARE!!!! Everytime I reformat my computer I have to spend at least half an hour uninstalling all of the bundled crap that comes on my emachines recovery disc. There should be a checklist before the install, and anything that you don't want installed, you can simply un-check.

Be aware that this IdeaStorm system does count its votes in 10s. So all votes appear inflated by a magnitude.
