Google's web based email, Gmail, was once only available if you knew someone on the service that could send you an invite. You could have also gone through the trouble and bought one for $250 on eBay. Well today Google announced that the service is now open for anyone that wants one, without an invite, or without sending an SMS to get an account. There is a free 2 GB of email storage for the taking if you don't have an account yet. Of course the Gmail account comes with Google Calendar and Docs & Spreadsheets to use and store data in as well.Gmail is now open for everyone

Not to burst your bubble Chris but this has been reported already by one of your very own Ryan Carter: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/12/06/gmail-gmail-read-all-about-it/
This is the second time in a week that the folks at Download Squad have stepped on someone else's find. I'm sure there has to be a better way for you people to check the stories before posting them. Unless of course its just a reminder to us, then say so.

Ya, how are you supposed to sign up for Gmail account? it isn't allowing me to sign up on the link provided, or anything. Also, in the Learn more section, it still says you need to get an invite through a phone.

Hey Justin,
This is the official announcement that Gmail is open to all.
Check out the update on Ryan's post. Apparantly it was just some misinformed tips that he received:

"UPDATE: Once again, stung by the Digg Effect. My bad. This is apparently totally bogus, you still need a mobile phone to signup or an invite."

Chris, when are they (google) gonna actually provide support for GMail? I post on the message boards that my e-mails are delayed by about 10 hours and no response from Google. Thoughts?

Wrong post. Gmail isn't open to the world. Not even to most of the Asian countries.
Here is my post on Google update - http://www.netgautam.com/wordpress/2007/02/08/google-documents-accessible-using-toolbar/
