Vista Countdown: 7 Days - What's wrong with it?
Windows Vista lands in one week, everybody. Personally, I can't wait--not because I'm going to go straight to the store and buy a copy, but because I can stop writing stories about everybody and their mom's predictions about the impact Vista will have, and start writing stories about the impact it actually has. Eventually.Actually, those articles are already starting to trickle in, like this one: The 5 Sins of Vista, from IntelliAdmin.com. In it, Steve Wiseman outlines five things in Vista that are, well, kinda broken. Here's the executive summary:
- The new file browsing interface is broken - Ew!
- The new start menu sucks (Kind of) - Kinda ew.
- Windows Networking is a mess - Clear as mud.
- Windows Search Is Broken - Double ew!
- Windows copying has not improved - Sigh.
In related news, Microsoft has disclosed that one out of every five Windows installations in use today is "non-genuine," i.e. possibly pirated, says BetaNews. [Via Digg]
So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

Good god, what version of vista do you use? Either you're one Beta 1 or on crack ecause I have the final release from MSDN and it works fantastic. Granted not perfect, but networking, searching, and copying have all improved. Sure, some people might not like the interface and star menu, but its not THAT bad. Im no Microsoft Fanboy but its a step up from XP.

Correction:
I meant to say version does he use. Not the writer of the blog. Sorry for the confusion

Props to whoever made that Ring movie poster - funny.
Also, I have informally polled family, friends and co-workers with the overwhelming majoring all yawing at the prospect of pay hundreds if not thousands to upgrade their hardware so it will run Vista.
The responses also showed a complete and total confusion of the 9 or 10 different versions of Vista flavors.

from the article: "I absolutely hate it when my 5000 file copy gets killed half way through because 1 single file can't be opened."
That was fixed in Vista long ago, either this guy is complaining about things he never bothered testing or he is lying or he was using a very old beta.

Bryan, check for yourself if Steve Wisman is right. I agree with him to all 5 points. but, he needs his Windows Vista for a total different purpose than I do. For me it is just a minor detail.
Steve's primary focus is on the things he discovered that are not working as they did in XP or are, indeed broken. He doesn't tell what is improved, and... why he won't go back to XP. Besides that, a new OS brings new functionality, but also modified functionality. The behavior is different than expected sometimes. I'm glad with this, otherwise we had some Win 3.1 functions in Vista.

Vista is a nice upgrade from XP. it definitely looks more like an Apple OS. I'll wait a little while longer to see what kind of bugs it may have. In a year or two, it will catch on in the mass market. the start menu is nice.

I've been runningo n Vista RC2 since it was released and here are my thoughts on these comments:
The new file browsing interface is broken - The interface is different yes, but once you get used to it it's actually really useful, and powerful. Don't fear change. Also, classic controls are there too if you need them that much. They're a bit harder to find, but the idea is to push the new interface.
The new start menu sucks (Kind of) - Again, getting used to. The start menu in structure isn't much different than before, only now when you click programs the list is all in the start menu, and it's easier to find things since they keep in one row instead of 3 or 4 taking up your entire screen.
Windows Networking is a mess - It does need some work, it isn't as clean as previous windows versions, but at least it's useable.
Windows Search Is Broken - The search feature works perfectly for me. I can find anything just by pressing start and typing.
Windows copying has not improved - Doubt it ever will. Though I have found the estimates it gives while copying are more accurate than they've ever been, it still sometimes takes forever to copy a local file =/

Hi Jordan,
You don't have to write about Vista if you mind.
Nobody asks you to write.. :)

Wow the guy who wrote that article.. wiseman... not so wise. Such a fool.
Number 1 - The new file browsing interface is broken
While I haven't tried that drop down menu thing, so I don't know about it. But here's what I do know is wrong.
"One other bone I have to pick with the new browsing interface is the difficulty in going back to the parent of the current directory. The new way makes going back up a few folders a much longer process. Simply stated there is no one button that will always bring you back up to the parent."
In the breadcrumb bar, it shows all the parent directories down to the directory that you are in. If you want to go up to a specific one in one button click here's what you do. You click on that folder name in the breadcrumb bar instead of one of the down arrows. WHOA! That was too hard.
Number 2 - The new start menu sucks (Kind of)
"If I want a specific folder to launch in explorer I just type it out. Click start, then run and type c: Press enter, and the folder will show up."
How about re-enabling the run command on the start menu, and then clicking start, then run, and type c: and press enter. Instead of typing it into the search box.
"So for me, when I type c: It launches Remote Desktop! Argg!"
According to the graphic above that, remote desktop doesn't even show up in the results. It would run welcome center. Thanks for that unneccessary exaggeration making it look more "broken" than it is.
Number 3 - Windows Networking is a mess
"If you have never used Vista before - Quick tell me how to change the IP address on my wireless card!"
Why not let people use vista and figure it out first; it's so retarded to challenge someone without the experience to do it. It's changed but it's not that difficult. You can do it the same way as XP, just click "Manage Network Connections" on the left to go to a more classic networking connections view.
Number 4 - Windows Search Is Broken
"Now when I want a simple search for any file that contains the string 'IntelliAdmin' I can't do it. Instead of fixing what they broke in XP SP2, they just took it out! I want a simple search program that will search for a file on my hard drive (Hint to Microsoft - Every file, not just the types you know about like Word and Excel files) that contains a specific string of letters. It can't be done any more with windows search."
You see that place at the top that says "search" try typing your query in there, FOOL! You can change from "indexed locations" to your entire computer as well. Or you can change your indexing options to index your whole computer.
Number 5 - Windows copying has not improved
I'll have to try that when I get my final version. I did hate it in previous version when 1 file didn't work and would cut copying. A "retry, skip, cancel" dialog would have been nice. Someone above said it was fixed.

I honestly think that 5 sins article is totally full of shit mainly because im a huge avid computer user. I own a mac g4 laptop as well as a windows laptop and a windows desktop. I spend atleast 6 to 12 hours a day on my computers. As much time as possible. And its been that way for atleast 6 years now if not more. I know alot about computers and how they work.
I've used Vista for over a month now on my laptop, i hate working (graphic design and video editing and what not) on laptops but now that vista is on it. I spend more time on the laptop than anything.
I think the OS is well rounded compared to how its been in the past. I still rather my OS X now, but vista is a great os and I think everyone that doesn't have it in 1 year should be slapped for being stupid when it comes to computers. I mostly think of those that just casually use them since its so protecting for them but period. Even someone like me, i love the way it runs. Check this out, i got a faster desktop than laptop (thats normal) but vista on my laptop is smoking my xp faster tower machine.
Your dumb if you think Vista isn't better than the others. Sorry, just speaking the truth. I had time to check for sure. I KNOW!

Excellent post, but a far more excellent graphic! "Before you die, you see [Windows Vista logo]", really got a laugh from me.

Totally agreed. Gosh! Can I get my Netowrk Connections Menu back on Start Menu? How many clicks do I need to get to my VPN connection?
