MP3tunes gives away unlimited music storage
MP3tunes is now offering free unlimited storage and music streaming for all your tunes. The site previously gave away 1GB of storage to sync your music, and even "sideload" any tunes you find on the web with Firefox and IE plugins to save the tunes you find to your locker. Now you get unlimited space to upload, store, sync, and enjoy all your music from any computer anywhere. Their uploader seems to upload fairly well, and doesn't take much babysitting to get it to work either. The audio quality is worthy of listening, it is seriously not bad. I am somewhat of an audiophile, and this service is really rocking for me right now. If you have a lot of music, it can take a while to upload your tracks (so leave it uploading overnight at least), but man, it is worth it, to be able to listen to your music anywhere you want. The service boasts the ability to stream to mobile devices, but sadly I haven't tried that feature yet. If you have the opportunity, try it out and let me know what you think of it. You can even sync album art. Wicked. My ear drums are going to need a vacation after this.UPDATE: If you sign up and don't see your account go to unlimited right away, you will still have 1GB, and will be put on the list for an unlimited account. The service is great, either way, but apparently, it isn't fully rolled out to all users yet. I had a free OBOE account previously, so I guess they allowed me to upgrade sooner than new sign-ups. My bad. Thanks Taylor for pointing this out.

I signed up, but I don't know when or *if* I'll ever get the free unlimited space.
From the signup page:
* Unlimited Storage - Free!
Free unlimited storage could be yours now! A select number of Free Unlimited lockers are released each day. Sign up for the Free Oboe locker to reserve your place in line.

So what's the catch? They're giving free hard drive space and bandwidth and expecting what in return? I've got 80 gigs of music and this sounds like a great deal but just curious what the deal is.

I also signed up and only got 1GB of storage. This despite their homepage banner which loudly proclaims "UNLIMITED STORAGE FREE"!
I would take this misleading ad as a warning. The kind of company which would trick users like this would not hestitate to suddenly start charging you, etc. "Oh, unlimited storage free? Yeah ... we meant unlimited storage free for 30 days."
Thanks, but no thanks.

I signed up two accounts on the basis that I might got one free. When I click through with the verification link, I was told:
Welcome to your music everywhere!
You now have an Oboe Free locker with unlimited storage for your music. Login and listen from any computer, any time

Hmmm.. This exact same move brought MP3.com on its knees a few years ago (when it was owned by the Linspire guy, and was focused on everyone posting and selling their own music rather than only having RIAA products). When they offered a service where you could put your mp3 on their servers, they were sued to the bone and eventually was sold to one of the big4 labels.
Now, lets see what will happen to this one.

Yeah, I predict this service is going to crash and burn.
All music you upload is publicly available via sideload.com, and a simple search for Pink Floyd for example, (http://www.sideload.com/cb/search/?keywords=pink+floyd&pg=1) reveals hundreds of copyrighted songs available for free download (add to your locker, download).
According to sideload FAQ, "Sideload.com does not store any music, but rather links to files publicly available other places on the net.". This is clearly not the case, as I can simply upload files via mp3tunes.com. Further, it goes on to discuss that DMCA takedown notices can be used to request removal of content.
I cannot see how this scheme is going to survive.

MP3tunes here!
To set the record straight: We are offering unlimited storage for free. All free users will eventually have this account(as noted on the sign up page). When you first sign up, if the unlimited account is not available(it is being rolled out in limited quantities per day), you will receive a 1gb account. As soon as your account has been upgraded you will receive another email from us letting you know that your access to unlimited storage is available.
Sideloading music via the browser plugins or through Sideload.com from sites where free music is available is separate from the locker service. The music that you sync from your computer is for personal use only and can not be publicly accessed.
Please read the complete TOS located at: http://www.mp3tunes.com/cb/terms_conditions/ for detailed information.
If you have any additional questions feel free to contact us through http://support.mp3tunes.com

"All music you upload is publicly available via sideload.com"
This is not correct actually, I have tried searching for many tunes I have uploaded using mp3tunes.com's unlimited service and none of them show up there; Im talking about rare stuff as well as more common, and not one of the tracks seems available to sideload via sideload.com
Personally, I thought this was the gambit, as it stands, I still can't work out the business model, but hey, gift horse, mouth.
