Corel is teaming up with Mozilla
In the wake of the news that Adobe is donating code to Mozilla, news broke yesterday of Corel hooking up with Mozilla. This time though, we will see Firefox bundled with some software instead: Corel will be packaging their WordPerfect Office X3 Home Edition 2007 with Firefox. The new package will include a word processor, spreadsheets, CD/DVD burning, and photo and video applications, as well as Norton security features. But will people be happy and willing to use it? This package from Corel usually sits at $79 retail. This smooth move from Corel is sure to get their brand buzzing again.

Corel would do better to support Open Document Format, if they want to play a part in promoting Open Source projects. Corel is an original member of the OASIS Technical Committee that brought ODF into being, but have yet to support it in their own office product.
Bundling the hugely successful Firefox with a Word Perfect release could perhaps be seen as Corel merely trying to catch onto the coat-tails of one of the most headline-friendly products on the go at the moment to get some free coverage. I doubt it will do much for Firefox at all.

This is lame. Mozilla is supposed to be a poster child of the open source movement, so bundling a closed-source word processor seems like a step backwards. Why not bundle OpenOffice or AbiWord?

Kenny and Chris are both right. WordPerfect has long been dead, and OpenOffice is a far better and more flexible alternative. Corel is trying one last desperate gasp to save itself.
