Google's stand-alone Gmail app for mobile phones
Google has added a new offering for mobile users: a stand-alone app for Java-enabled phones that makes accessing Gmail on the run a little more friendly. Google has a little demo of the app in action over on the Google Mobile site, and it looks pretty slick. The aim here is to make the mobile Gmail experience easier and faster, since the standard mobile web interface isn't exactly the best for getting your correspondence done quickly. The new program includes some of our favorite touches from the full-fledged Gmail, like conversation view. It also has built-in support for viewing some attachments, including images Word docs, and PDFs. MobileCrunch's Oliver Starr has penned a review of the new app, and says "From a user perspective the new application offers a substantial (and I mean truly noticable) improvement in how fast your mailbox performs. No more interminable waiting while your next ten messages load - hit next and in a snap your next ten messages are right there. Likewise mail opens quickly and even attached files open faster than I've ever seen an attachment open on a mobile device."If your phone is on the supported list, you can download the program for free by pointing its browser at gmail.com/app.

The link should be gmail.com/app (not aap). You link is right, but the text is not.

I tried it on my Nokia 6230i and it got installed perfectly, but it refused to connect even though it triggered the GPRS connection to work. I tried it on my Nokia 9500 Communicator, and it worked perfectly using the WIFI connection.

Hmm... I'm getting a 404 on my N70 after it tries to find the actual JAR file. Anyone else having trouble with this?

GMail on my Cricket phone is pretty great. Text entry isn't the best, but this isn't a smart phone, it's just got the Open Wave broswer. But unlimited time on it, and the numbered shortcuts for different actions makle it a breeze to use.

Using opera mini 2.0 on my N80, i get a 404 error (at gmail.com/app) Used the default browser on the phone, which found the site and downloaded the app. I get an error when trying to launch the app though, even though the N80 is on the list of supported phones. Boo.

This is a dream on my Treo 650. Exactly what I've been looking forward to ever since Google Maps came out for the PalmOS.
