An alternative guide to free music online
Our sister site The Digital Music Weblog (she's the quiet emo one with the plastic-framed glasses) has a lengthy article on how to get the most from your portable music buying dollar. Showcasing alternatives to iTunes, Napster and the riot of other DRM laden legal services out there, "Minor alternatives to major labels; a crash course in free music online" identifies non-DRM music services that work with any media player, and on any platform.
Thousands of artists are publishing music via the Internet, and a great number of them are finding out that, while it can help, they don't necessarily need a major label deal to find exposure and make money doing what they love.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.

*Garage Band (not apple's software)
*The Alternative Music Show and shows like it that showcase all kinds of downloadable bands.
All those acts really wouldn't mind getting a few bucks for their work, but they want distribution, too, so that you can help spread the seeds of their hard work. By all means, get out there and look. Check out MySpace, too. Bands are making and breaking themselves in that cluttered, eye-killing, crazy site.
