Okay, I have some OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)
tendencies. One of them is that I like the first program on my taskbar to be Outlook, and the second one to be
Firefox, and I want them that way all the time. Back, way back, when I was running Windows 2000, I had a
utility that allowed me to move things around to the way I wanted them when I needed to. I can’t remember the
name of that program, but in any event it ceased to matter once I had upgraded to XP, as it didn’t work in XP.
Thankfully, TaskbarPP
allows me to get back to my neat and tidy ways.
Note that the link we’re pointing to here is a Babelfish translation, and can therefore be less than 100% clear at times. The application works great in English regardless.

Heh - I have the exact same OCD, and always want that exact same order for things. Thanks for the tip!

I wish I could use this utility, but when I started it up it says:
The "Group similar taskbar buttons" option in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Property" dialog box is turned on. Taskbar++ couldn't sort taskbar buttons if this option is turned on.
To me, grouping the similar buttons was an important improvement in Windows XP, and it's more important than the ability to move around the buttons. If only this thing could move around groups too...

pretty cool. for those who don't read instructions, like me, you need to hold down the "ALT" key over the toolbar until it changes to a hand in order to move stuff around.

Wow... one of the best little freebie programs you've shown us. I used to use a similar program under Win2K, but it didn't work under WinXP. Thanks... and keep adding these types of time-savers to the blog!

Here's another little freeware program that allows you to rearrange the items on your taskbar, TaskArrange: http://users.forthnet.gr/pat/efotinis/programs/taskarrange.html
I've used it for a while on Win XP, and it works great, even supporting grouped items (why's everybody so down on the grouping?)!
Supposedly works on pretty much every version of Windows (two version available, one with Unicode support for NT-based OSes, and one with out for all Windows OSes).
I wanted to mention this over on the original LifeHacker post, but Gawker has that lame comment policy. Oh well, their loss...
