Google answers base questions ... not

Google has issued a response to yesterday's leaks about its planned database service (which included the screenshot that appears above) with a vaguely worded statement about "testing a new way for content owners to submit their content to Google, which we hope will complement existing methods such as our web crawl and Google Sitemaps." Meanwhile, the base.google.com URL leads to a "403, Access Forbidden" error, leading at least some to speculate that the service is active but protected, since the 403 error is usually generated when a site's administrator blocks access to a directory. Google typically redirects traffic from inactive domains (such as calendar.google.com) back to the Google home page.
