WebMailCompose: Handle mailto: links with webmail - Today's Browser Tip

I wonder for what percent of Internet users the default behavior for mailto: links is absolutely useless. My primary e-mail account is with Gmail, and it's long frustrated me that modern browsers have no support for webmail and assume you want to use a desktop e-mail client to handle that mailto: link. Jed Brown was apparently frustrated, too, as he created WebMailCompose, an extension which lets you associate mailto: links in Firefox with the most popular webmail services, including Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Netscape, OperaMail, Mail.com, Horde, and SquirrelMail, plus an option for a custom client.

The official Gmail Notifier (the one from Google for your taskbar, not the Firefox extension) has a setting to "use Gmail for internet mailto: links" and it works perfectly. I only use Firefox, so I can't verify it in any other browser, but it should theoretically work in all browsers.

Setting up Gmail as a POP/SMTP account for use w/Outlook also works nicely for mailto links.

Setting up Gmail as a POP/SMTP account for use with Thunderbird works better for me.
