eBay's buying Skype for $2.6 billion
Personally I'm kinda scratching my head on this one, but apparently the rumors are true: eBay - an online auction giant, is buying Skype - a VoIP startup. I'm not really seeing a whole lot of insightful speculation around the net as to why though. Infoworld takes a couple pot-shots, thinking that maybe eBay simply needs to start expanding their business toolbelt, and Victor last week blogged a few good Skype tie-ins to eBay auctions.Whatever the reason, I think this is going to be interesting. This is an odd couple situation to me, like if Motorola bought a furniture company or something. At the end of the day though, I hope Skype retains a free version for all us little people.
