eBay to buy Skype?

skypeHere we go again. Every month seems to bring wind of yet another big company looking to gobble up Skype, the little VoIP company that could. Yahoo, Microsoft, even News Corp. (owns Fox News here in the states) have supposedly tossed about offers. Now Computerworld is reporting that eBay is in talks to acquire Skype. This is intriguing.

It would be cool if you could talk to other auctioners, or leave voicemail. For one thing, it'd be harder for people to scam— maybe. It could also open up a whole suite of capabilities for small business owners who run eBay shops. The article cites the Wall Street Journal as saying the deal could go for as much as $2-3 billion dollars. Wow. Who said the dot-com days were over?

Still, eBay apparently feels they need to do "something" to shake up their business. With the online auction space pretty much under their thumb (please don't get me started on PayPal), stockholders are always asking the question, "what's next?" Skype, for their part, have considered an IPO, but I doubt that would garner as much cashola as this deal. Still in the early stages, so anything could happen.
