Ask Download Squad: How do you wrangle text?
Last week, we asked you to pick the best download manager. Interestingly enough, a lot of you just use the one that comes with your browser, especially over broadband. However, some popular alternatives included the FlashGot and DownThemAll extensions for Firefox, and GetRight. And now, this week's question:After writing the post earlier this week about using one big text file as your PIM, I started thinking about ways to manage that mammoth file. And so did you. Not surprisingly, many of the comments on that post were about using outliners wikis or other tools designed to make text more manageable. So, that's this week's question: what do you use to manage structured text? Notice I said structured text. Let's limit this to programs that let you work with structured (but not formatted) text files —OPML and XML but not RTF or DOC. And don't worry. We'll deal with the more general question of text editors (and the religious wars that inspires) later. Do you use a wiki? Dave Winer's OPML editor? Something entirely different? Let us know. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. If it's certain kinds of code, I really like Eclipse (btw - check out their new Web Tools just released a couple days ago). I also use Text Wrangler to "manage" certain text. Do those 2 count?

Treepad. A small, simplistic, easy-to-use organizer for everything in my life. Now I just have to remember to back that file up before formatting my hard drive...
