Browser tip of the day: keep your clients current

Mac users now have a choice of three open source browsers: Camino, Firefox and Safari (well, Safari really isn't open source per se, but the underlying technology is). And, like most open source projects, these are updated pretty frequently; in fact, for the most part, there are daily builds, at least of Camino and Firefox. But taking advantage of those builds, which include everything from bug-fixes to new additions, can be a bit of a pain, since it means downloading and installing new code on a daily basis. However, Reinhold Penner has made this all much easier, with three programs that completely automate the update process. CaminoKnight and FireFix will download and install the daily build for, respectively, Camino and Firefox, while Night Shift gets the latest version of WebKit, Safari's rendering engine. You can use cron or other utilities to run these daily, and guarantee you'll always have the latest versions on your machine (of course, all the usual disclaimers about installing pre-release software apply, so only do this if you're prepared for some bumps in the road).

What about Shiira? Isn't it Open Source as well? And *so* much cooler than Safari.

Good point. Shiira is open source. Unfortunately, Penner hasn't, er, penned a Shiira updater yet. Maybe that's his next project!
