Longhorn brings DRM to a screen near you
Think there are already enough restrictions on how you use content on your computer? Then wait until you use Longhorn (yes, it might be a long wait). Among the many new features built into Microsoft's forthcoming OS is a little something called PVP-OPM (Protected Video Path – Output Protection Management), which is basically display-based DRM. The idea is that Longhorn will identify your monitor, and content providers will be able to encode video files in a way that will force you to use an interface that includes built-in copy-protection (such as HDMI). In some cases, you'll be able to download a lower-resolution stream if you're not using a compliant monitor; in others, you'll get nada. So, if you've yet to replace that CRT with a brand-new digital LCD, your time may be running out (of course, like I said, it may well be a long wait).
With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
