Filesystem tagging for Linux

Linux filesystem tagging

Stephen Hahn isn't the first to suggest adding tagging functionality to the filesystem so we can manage files the same way we do bookmarks with del.icio.us -- Apple is doing some interesting things with Spotlight and metadata, and Microsoft is working on the mythical WinFS, for example -- but he might be the first to actually implement it. He's created a Perl script for Linux called "tag" which lets you tag your files and retrieve them in a manner reminiscent of del.icio.us -- but from the command line, of course. Neat trick, Stephen.
