Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del in Windows XP will pop up the task manager, its Processes tab sporting a dizzying list of programs most of which, to the naked eye, aren't doing anything but taking up precious RAM. Many of these are Services, the little programs that Windows starts when you turn on your computer that ostensibly do vital things behind-the-scenes. Of course, some of them truly are useless, which is why this list of Windows XP Services is so handy. The author runs down a dossier of services you will frequently find running on your Windows system, explains what each does, and tells you if, why, and how, you should disable it.
