Global raids net $50 million in bootleg software, media
In a global sting led by the FBI, police in 11 countries targeted software and media pirates, shutting down eight servers and grabbing what they said was $50 million worth of bootleg media. The attack on warez gangs, called Operation Site Down, was carried out in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands,Israel, Germany and Portugal. Police also arrested four people in the U.S and three in the Netherlands. While authorities are touting the crackdown as a major victory, it remains to be seen how much of a dent the operation really makes in piracy — especially since warez hotbeds in eastern Europe and Asia were untouched.
