If there's one application I dread using it's Acrobat Reader. It takes more than 30 seconds to load on my reasonably fast computer, it eats up mountains of system resources, and using it feels like running an endurance trial in a peet bog. Thankfully, our collective pain may finally be over with Foxit PDF Reader. It may be missing a few of the more esoteric features that Acrobat Reader has, but chances are you weren't using those anyway. Among the rave reviews at Download.com, the only caveat seems to be some trouble integrating into Firefox.

You should check out Adobe Reader SpeedUp from http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/misc/index.php.
It disables a bunch of plugins which cause Adobe Reader to load so slow.
